U.S. Park Police began finally enforcing a no-camping rule at two Washington sites where Occupy protesters have been demonstrating for months over financial inequality and other issues.
The National Park Service has already warned the protesters Friday at McPherson Square and at Freedom Plaza that those who did not follow the camping rule will be violating the camping regulation and will be subject to arrest from Monday afternoon.
The roughly 120 protesters have decided to ignored the warning and have said they intend to stay put defend their camp site. At noon protesters released a large tent over the main statue at McPherson Square that included the words "Tent of Dreams." and “We are the 99 percent.”
"If they have a few hundred people sleeping on the sidewalks in this city, it'll make quite an impression" A occupier who has been living at Freedom Plaza from October said "We already have thousands of people living on the streets in this country" "We're here to exercise our freedom of speech, which is our right" He added.
The enforcement became unavoidable after a House oversight subcommittee hearing last week where Republican lawmakers questioned why the park service has allowed the protesters to camp for months on federal land. National Park Service Director Jonathan Jarvis said protesters have a right to be in the park and won’t be evicted as long as they won’t sleep there for overnight.
