Political: President Obama To Host Australian Prime Minister Monday (RTTNews) - The White House announced Friday that President Barack Obama will meet with Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd at the White House Monday. According to the White House, Obama and Rudd will discuss a variety of issues, such as the war in Afghanistan, climate change and the upcoming climate change conference in Copenhagen. Both Obama and Rudd are scheduled to attend the conference in Copenhagen, with Obama having announced his decision to attend earlier in the week. The conference runs December 7 - 18. Upon learning that Obama would be attending the conference, Rudd had said, "I welcome the news overnight that Obama will attend the UN climate conference in Copenhagen." While at the conference, Obama will propose a US emissions reduction target in the range of 17% below 2005 levels in 2020. In light of Obama's goal to reduce emissions 83% by 2050, the White House said the legislation would entail a 30% reduction below 2005 levels in 2025 and a 42% reduction below 2005 in 2030. In addition, the White House said that other Obama administration officials will be attending the conference. These include Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, Commerce Secretary Gary Locke, Energy Secretary Steven Chu, and Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa Jackson. Further, Obama and other administration officials intend to show the contributions the US has made to combat climate change, including $80 billion invested in clean energy through the Recovery Act. |
