Political: Clinton Says Iraqi Elections Could Be Delayed Beyond January (RTTNews) - Secretary of State Hillary Clinton indicated Monday that she believes it is possible that the upcoming Iraqi elections may be delayed beyond January. The possible delay comes after Tariq al-Hashimi, one of Iraq's two vice presidents, vetoed a newly passed election law, arguing that it did not provide enough representation to Iraqis living abroad. With the veto, the Iraqi elections were certain to be delayed. "We support the Iraqi Government's efforts to pass an election law so that they can proceed with planned elections," Clinton said. "We know that there are some continuing concerns as expressed by the vice president that have to be addressed." Clinton said that the Obama administration continues to believe there will be elections, but she said, "They might slip by some period of time until this is worked out, because at some point the law has to be in place for the planning to begin, and so there necessarily needs to be a period of time in which the planning can occur." On Monday, Iraq's parliament approved an amended law to organize parliamentary elections next year, though resistance from Sunni members of Iraq's government could result in Hashimi vetoing this law as well, which could delay the elections be weeks or even months. "We're going to veto the law because it's unconstitutional," said Sunni lawmaker Oussam al-Nujaifi. "And that means a delay in the election." The main objection Sunnis have to the law passed Monday is that it reduces the influence Sunnis have in Iraq's government. |
