Political: New Poll Shows Senator Dodd With Tough Bid For Re-Election
11/12/09 12:26 pm (EST)

(RTTNews) - A new Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday showed that Senator Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., faces a difficult re-election in Connecticut's 2010 U.S. Senate race.

According to the poll, which surveyed 1,236 Connecticut registered voters November 3-8, former Connecticut Congressman Rob Simmons, who is the frontrunner among Republican candidates, holds a 49-38 percent lead over Dodd.

The poll also found that Dodd trails former World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) executive Linda McMahon 43-41 percent.

Connecticut voters, the poll showed, disapprove of the job Dodd is doing by 54-40 percent, an increase from the 49-43 percent disapproval rating he held in September. Additionally, 53 percent of those surveyed said Dodd does not deserve re-election.

"After inching up in the polls for months, Senator Dodd is sliding back down again on job approval," said Quinnipiac University Poll Director Douglas Schwartz. "He continues to struggle with independent voters as 60 percent disapprove of the way he is handling his job."

Schwartz added that McMahon, who entered the race a couple of months ago, "made a big splash into the race two months ago and finishes second in the primary to Rob Simmons. She tops Dodd by a couple of points, but it appears that more than 40 percent of voters would vote for anybody but Dodd at this point."

The poll further showed Dodd's favorability rating at 42 percent compared to the 49 percent who don't view him favorably. Simmons, meanwhile, has a favorability rating of 40 percent compared to just 10 percent who view him unfavorably.

Quinnipiac also asked Connecticut voters if they believe the views of Sen. Joseph Lieberman, I-Conn., are closer to the Republican Party than to the Democratic Party, with 51 percent saying that the think his views are closer to the Republican Party.

At the same time, voters said 64-29 percent that Democrats should not strip Lieberman of his Homeland Security Committee chairmanship if he joins Republicans in a filibuster against the Democrats' health care reform.

Looking ahead to 2012, the poll showed that Connecticut voters were split 46-45 percent on whether Lieberman deserves to be re-elected, with Republicans favoring Lieberman's re-election at a much higher rate than Democrats.
