Power-sharing Agreement In Madagascar (RTTNews) - Ending months of wrangling over power, Madagascar's political rivals agreed Saturday to form a power-sharing government. The agreement was reached in crisis talks held in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, between leaders of rival political groups, including President Andry Rajoelina and his predecessor Marc Ravalomanana. Rajoelina said he will remain president until elections next year and bring in two 'co-presidents' from other political groups. An agreement in August to form a power-sharing government failed to materialize, as opposition leaders accused Rajoelina of violating it by naming a cabinet of his choice. After leading an anti-government campaign, in March, Rajoelina installed himself in the president's offices with the help of the army, forcing Ravalomanana to flee the presidential palace. The African Union (AU) has suspended Madagascar from the confederation of nations, expressing its disagreement over the "unconstitutional" change of power in the Indian Ocean island nation. The United States suspended its aid to Madagascar. |
