: Owens Edges Hoffman For NY-23 Seat
11/04/09 12:20 am (EST)

(RTTNews) - Democrat Bill Owens outlasted Conservative candidate Doug Hoffman on Tuesday to claim the vacant seat for New York State's 23rd Congressional District - becoming the first Democrat to win the seat in more than 100 years.

With 88 percent of the vote in, Owens held 49 percent of the vote to 46 for Hoffman - who shortly after midnight called Owens to concede the race.

Republican Dierdre Scozzafava was a distant third with 5 percent of the vote.

The race was seen as a defining event for the Republican Party, since Scozzafava was bypassed for support by several top national party members as not conservative enough. She ultimately withdrew from the race - although her name remained on the ballot - and threw her support behind Owens.

The special election became necessary when President Barack Obama selected incumbent Republican John McHugh to become Army secretary earlier this year after 16 years at the post.

Elsewhere, Republican Chris Christie defeated Democratic incumbent Jon Corzine in the race for governor of New Jersey, handing a second state to the GOP in Tuesday's elections.

With 99 percent of the vote tabulated, the 47-year-old Christie led Corzine 49 percent to 45 percent, while independent Chris Daggett was a distant third.

Both Obama and Vice President Joe Biden both campaigned for Corzine, but that wasn't enough to keep the independents from voting Republican on Tuesday.

In Virginia, Republican candidate Bob McDonnell defeated Democratic candidate Creigh Deeds. The 55 year-old McDonnell is considered strongly conservative in his viewpoints. He will become the state's first Republican chief executive in eight years.

McDonnell's victory led a GOP sweep of Virginia's statewide races by Republicans, who also won the seats of Lieutenant Governor and Attorney General.

Both New Jersey and Virginia went to the Democrats in last year's presidential election.

Also, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg was a strong favorite to win re-election, and was projected the winner shortly after the polls closed by the New York Times. Then later with 99 percent of the vote counted, the independent Bloomberg won 51 percent of the vote to 46 from Democrat William Thompson to be declared the winner from other media outlets.
