NewsUSD 2 Mn Landmine Assistance For Mozambique (RTTNews) - The United States has announced a financial assistance of USD 2 million to help Mozambique protect its citizens from abandoned landmines and unexploded munitions following decades of conflict. The State Department said the aid, announced October 19 in Mozambique's capital Maputo, will be used to fund survey and clearance teams from The HALO Trust, a Britain-based non-governmental organization and leading U.S. humanitarian demining partner. The U.S. has provided the south-east African nation more than USD 47 million in assistance under its Humanitarian Mine Action program since the 1992 Rome General Peace Accords ended nearly 30 years of civil conflict. The program, which has contributed significantly to reduce casualties from mines and explosive remnants of war, is one of many ways the U.S. is demonstrating its commitment to peace and stability in the region, the State Department said. Since 1993, the United States has been the world's leading contributor to post-conflict efforts to remove landmines and unexploded munitions around the globe, delivering more than $1.4 billion in aid to nearly 50 counties worldwide. |
