PoliticalNobel Peace Laureates Express Solidarity With Dalai Lama
10/27/09 10:38 am (EST)

(RTTNews) - Eight Nobel peace prize winners Tuesday expressed solidarity with Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, also a peace laureate, for his non-violent struggle for 'meaningful autonomy.'

A statement of support by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Rigoberta Menchu Tum, Adolfo Perez Equivel, Betty Williams, Jody Williams, Shirin Ebadi, Mairead Maguire and Wangari Maathai was presented to the Dalai Lama at a public function in his Indian base in Dharamsala, a Himalayan valley.

For five decades, the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan people had waged a peaceful struggle to preserve their ancient culture, religion, language and identity amid great adversity, the statement added.

They noted that "the issue of Tibet remains tragically unresolved and Tibetans continued to endure harsh and repressive conditions" in their homeland.

The 8-member group expressed its "grave concern about the survival of the Tibetan identity" and offered support to "His Holiness for his non-violent efforts to attain meaningful autonomy for the Tibetan people."

They urged Beijing to take "immediate and constructive steps to resolve the status of Tibet and end the oppressive policies that continue to marginalize and impoverish Tibetans in their own land."

The Chinese authorities call the Dalai Lama a wolf in monk's robe and a devil with a human face, hell-bent on breaking Tibet away from China, while the international community questions Beijing's notorious legacy of suppressing human rights in the Communist country.

In a white paper published in March, a year after the government violently crushed a series of anti-China protests by Buddhist monks in Tibet, Beijing claimed that the cause of human rights in Tibet had made remarkable progress, and that the living conditions of the people were improved.

It warned the Dalai Lama and his followers against separatist attempts, as "history has convincingly proved that there is no way to restore the old order."

China has ruled Tibet since 1951. On March 10, 1959, troops suppressed an uprising against Chinese rule.
