: Bunning Reacts To Obama's Health Care Speech (RTTNews) - U.S. Senator Jim Bunning (R-KY) on Wednesday evening responded to President Barack Obama's address to a joint session of Congress regarding health care reform. "Everyone agrees that improvements need to be made to our health care system," Bunning said in a statement. "That's the easy part. Too many Americans are uninsured, underinsured or cannot afford the health insurance they have. The hard part is figuring out what specific changes to make and what the impact will be. I have significant concerns with what President Obama and the Democrats are proposing. I do not support a government-run health care program. I believe it will kill private insurance." "I have concerns about greatly expanding the number of people covered under Medicaid, since states are having a hard time affording the programs they currently have and simply using more federal dollars is irresponsible," Bunning continued. "I have concerns with using cuts to the Medicare program to help fund health care reform legislation. Medicare will be broke in 2017 and diverting money from this important program to fund new spending would be doing a disservice to our nation's seniors." Obama told Congress that his plan would include a public option for health insurance - a step he said would make the private insurance industry "more accountable" for their role and actions in the system. The President said his plan would cost an estimated $900 billion over ten years. Obama said the current system, in which some Americans are left with no affordable medical coverage in times of illness or injury is unacceptable and will be addressed in his reform plan. |
