: Pennsylvania Governor Job Approval Sinks To Lowest Ever
07/21/09 02:16 pm (EST)

(RTTNews) - A new Quinnipiac University Poll released Tuesday found that Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell's job approval rating has shrunk to its lowest level yet.

According to the poll, which surveyed over 1,170 Pennsylvania voters from July 14-19, Rendell currently only holds a 39% job approval rating. Additionally, 63% of voters reject his call to raise the state income tax temporarily to balance the budget.

In terms of the current budget stalemate in Pennsylvania, 30% of voters put the blame on Rendell's shoulders, 17% blame Republicans, 11% blame Democrats and 28% blame everyone equally.

"The hassle in Harrisburg over the state budget certainly has caught the public's attention and voters are angry about it," said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"Up until now we've called Governor Ed Rendell 'Teflon Ed,' but the budget crisis clearly has put some scratches on him and the state economic crisis is sticking to the Governor."

The poll found that 47% of Democrats disapprove of Rendell's proposed tax increases, while 81% of Republicans and 58% of independents disapprove.

"Voters clearly don't want their taxes raised to solve the budget mess," Brown added. "Given a choice between raising taxes to maintain the level of services, or cutting spending and leaving taxes the same, 55% favor spending cuts and 35% say raise taxes."

Further, the poll found that 57% of Pennsylvania voters are "somewhat dissatisfied" or "very dissatisfied" with the way things are going in the state today. This represents the highest dissatisfaction rate ever.
